Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya collectively earned more than $1 billion in 2024 from live music ticket sales, gaming, and over-the-top (OTT) streaming, underscoring the rapid growth of Africa’s digital entertainment sector.
According to the newly released PwC Africa Entertainment and Media Outlook 2025–2029, the surge in entertainment revenue across the continent is being driven by an expanding middle class, higher disposable incomes, rapid urbanisation, and a young, connected population eager for fresh experiences.
The report noted that, in the post-pandemic era, consumers are spending more on leisure activities, online content, and live performances, marking a long-term shift toward entertainment-focused consumption.
According to Reuters, South Africa continues to dominate as the region’s entertainment hub, generating significant revenue across live music, gaming, and streaming. The country’s live music ticket sales reached $76 million (R1.4 billion), with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.9% projected through 2029.
Gaming revenue stood at $296 million (R5.5 billion), growing at a 4.6% CAGR, while OTT streaming brought in $226 million (R4.2 billion) in 2024, expected to rise to $302 million (R5.6 billion) by 2029 at a 6% CAGR.

Nigeria is rapidly closing the gap, fueled by the global success of Afrobeats, the expansion of local gaming startups, and the rise of on-demand streaming platforms. The country’s live music ticket sales amounted to $1 million with a 1.8% CAGR.
Gaming revenue reached $176 million, recording the highest growth rate among the three countries at 7.4%. OTT streaming revenue was $19 million, projected to grow at an 8.3% CAGR.
Kenya also maintained strong momentum in East Africa, driven by a tech-savvy population and a vibrant concert scene. Live music ticket sales were $1 million with a 2.1% CAGR. Gaming generated $153 million with a 6.9% CAGR, while OTT streaming revenue hit $9 million, expected to grow at 8.5%, the fastest rate in the region.
The report highlights that Africa’s digital entertainment market is entering a new phase of growth, supported by demographic strength, increasing internet access, and the cultural influence of its creative industries.
