Adewale “Wale” Tinubu, Group Chief Executive Officer of Oando Plc, was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Business (Honoris Causa) by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) during the institution’s 56th convocation ceremony held on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

The prestigious honour was bestowed in recognition of Tinubu’s significant contributions to enterprise building, energy sector transformation, and national development. The University’s Governing Council approved the award following the recommendation of the Senate, highlighting his leadership role in strengthening indigenous participation in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry while creating employment and fostering economic resilience through private-sector-driven growth.
During the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola described Tinubu as a distinguished leader whose career has exemplified disciplined entrepreneurship, institutional leadership, and long-term value creation.
Alongside Tinubu, former Attorney-General of the Federation Kanu Agabi was also honoured with an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the event. Receiving the honour, Tinubu referred to the recognition as a “renewed call to service”, emphasizing the importance of leadership as a tool for societal good.

The award also acknowledged Tinubu’s involvement in advancing education through initiatives such as the Oando Foundation’s Adopt-a-School Initiative, which supports infrastructure development, teacher training, scholarship programs, and the reintegration of out-of-school children into formal education.
This honorary doctorate reinforces Tinubu’s influence not only as a corporate leader but also as a key contributor to Nigeria’s educational and economic landscape.
