Uganda Military Chief Orders Closure Of Two Major Media Outlets

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ordered the closure of two of the country’s leading media organisations, Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda, in a move that has renewed debate about press freedom and democratic governance in the East African nation.

According to Reuters, Kainerugaba announced the decision through a series of posts on social media, declaring that he did not believe in a free press and insisting that the media should be guided by what he described as “cadres of the revolution.”

The military chief, who is also the son of President Yoweri Museveni, said the two media organisations would not resume operations without his approval.

Reuters reported that Kainerugaba did not provide specific reasons for ordering the shutdown of the outlets, both of which are owned by Kenya-based Nation Media Group.

According to Reuters, Daily Monitor, Uganda’s largest independent newspaper, reported that military personnel had been deployed to Nation Media Group premises in Kampala, preventing staff members from entering or leaving the facility.

NTV Uganda, alongside other television and radio platforms operated by the media company, was reportedly off air following the directive.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has increasingly become a prominent political figure in Uganda and is widely viewed as a possible successor to President Yoweri Museveni, who has governed the country since 1986.

Reuters noted that Kainerugaba has attracted international attention in recent years because of controversial statements made on social media, including remarks directed at opposition figures.

Government spokesperson Alan Kasujja had not commented on the matter at the time of reporting, while Nation Media Group executives also declined to issue an immediate response.

The latest development has revived concerns about media independence in Uganda, particularly given previous confrontations between authorities and independent news organisations.

What This Means For Africa

The closure of two prominent media outlets in Uganda highlights continuing concerns surrounding press freedom and freedom of expression in several African countries.

Independent media organisations play a critical role in democratic societies by providing access to information, holding institutions accountable, and promoting public discourse.

For General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the decision further places him at the centre of national political discussions as speculation about Uganda’s future leadership continues to intensify.

His growing political profile has drawn increased attention both within Uganda and internationally, particularly as conversations around succession in Africa’s long-serving governments become more prominent.

The development also raises broader questions about the relationship between governments, security institutions, and independent media across the continent.

Uganda has previously witnessed tensions involving media organisations. Reuters recalled that in 2013, authorities shut down the Daily Monitor for ten days following reports related to succession discussions within President Museveni’s administration.

As Africa continues to experience rapid digital transformation and greater access to information, debates around media regulation, freedom of expression, and national security are likely to remain significant policy issues.

For investors, civil society groups, and international observers, developments affecting press freedom often serve as important indicators of a country’s broader governance environment and institutional strength.
