Meta Lays Off 3,000 Employees Across Africa, Europe, and Asia in Latest Restructuring

Meta is set to begin another round of layoffs, affecting approximately 3,000 employees across Africa, Europe, and Asia, starting Monday, February 10, 2025. The company will notify affected staff, with notices rolling out from 5 a.m. local time in most countries.

This latest round of layoffs targets Meta’s “lowest performers,” accounting for about 5% of its workforce. Unlike previous layoffs, the company will not be shutting down offices or making big public announcements.

Interestingly, while Meta is letting people go, it’s also ramping up hiring for machine learning engineers and other key engineering roles, indicating that AI is a priority for 2025.

In Nigeria, Meta has been quietly scaling back operations, having cut down its Lagos office space and laid off at least 35 employees, including its entire Nigerian engineering team, in mid-2023.

The impact of this latest round of layoffs on Nigerian employees is still unclear, but given Meta’s recent track record, it’s likely that Africa will be significantly affected.
