Ethiopia’s Prosperity Party Secures Another Dominant Parliamentary Victory

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party has secured another overwhelming parliamentary majority following this month’s national elections, reinforcing his position as one of Africa’s most influential political leaders.

According to Reuters, official results released by Ethiopia’s National Election Board showed that the ruling Prosperity Party won 438 parliamentary seats, comfortably surpassing the 274 seats required to secure a majority in the country’s House of Peoples’ Representatives.

The outcome was widely expected, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed entering the elections as the clear frontrunner against a fragmented opposition landscape.

Since coming to power in 2018, Abiy has reshaped Ethiopia’s political environment through economic reforms, institutional restructuring, and the creation of the Prosperity Party, which replaced the former ruling coalition in 2019.

According to Reuters, the Prosperity Party secured roughly 90% of the seats for which election results were announced.

The victory mirrors the party’s strong performance in the 2021 elections and further consolidates Abiy Ahmed’s political influence in Africa’s second most populous nation.

Reuters reported that not all of Ethiopia’s 547 parliamentary seats were contested during the election. Voting did not take place in the Tigray region and in several constituencies across the Amhara region due to ongoing security and political challenges.

Despite these challenges, the election result demonstrates the continued strength of the Prosperity Party’s political machinery and organisational reach across much of the country.

Supporters of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed have pointed to improvements in food security, infrastructure development, and economic growth as key achievements under his administration.

Government forecasts indicate Ethiopia’s economy could grow by more than 10% in 2026, making it one of the fastest-growing economies on the African continent.

A Leadership Tested By Challenges

While Abiy Ahmed has consolidated significant political support since assuming office, his administration continues to face complex security and governance challenges.

Reuters noted that Ethiopia continues to grapple with insurgencies in parts of Oromia and Amhara, two of the country’s largest regions.

In Oromia, clashes involving the Oromo Liberation Army have continued in recent years, while parts of Amhara remain affected by conflict involving the Fano militia.

The political situation in Tigray also remains closely watched following the devastating civil war that ended with a peace agreement in 2022.

Despite these pressures, Abiy Ahmed’s government has maintained its focus on economic reforms and national development initiatives aimed at positioning Ethiopia as a leading economic power in Africa.

What This Means For Africa

The election result provides political continuity for Ethiopia at a time when the country is pursuing ambitious economic and development goals.

As one of Africa’s largest economies and most populous nations, Ethiopia’s political stability carries implications far beyond its borders.

For Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the victory strengthens his mandate to continue implementing economic reforms, attracting investment, expanding infrastructure, and advancing Ethiopia’s industrialisation agenda.

The result also signals that the Prosperity Party remains the dominant force in Ethiopian politics despite ongoing security challenges and criticism from opposition groups.

For Africa, Ethiopia’s continued economic growth trajectory remains significant. The country plays an increasingly important role in regional trade, diplomacy, infrastructure development, and continental integration initiatives.

As Ethiopia navigates the next phase of its political and economic journey, Abiy Ahmed’s leadership will continue to be closely watched across Africa and the wider international community.
