How Kelvin Elamah Uses Strategy, Storytelling, and Mentorship to Shape Africa’s Digital Media Scene

Kelvin Elamah isn’t just a name in Nigeria’s digital media space, he’s a force of creative evolution.

From studying Industrial Chemistry at FUTA to leading video strategy at Pulse Nigeria, and now stepping into a new era at PressOne Africa, Kelvin’s journey is a masterclass in passion, reinvention, and intentional growth.

What makes his story so compelling isn’t just the titles or the transitions, it’s the grit behind the scenes.

The sleepless nights learning how to edit, the boldness to evolve in an ever-changing landscape, and the heart to pour back into rising creatives.

In this conversation, Kelvin opens up about the mentors who shaped him, the challenges that refined him, and the fire that keeps him pushing forward, not just for himself, but for a generation of storytellers looking to break through.

CA: Kelvin, you’ve had quite a remarkable journey. Can you take us back to where it all began?

Kelvin: Absolutely. It all started at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), where I studied Industrial Chemistry. Funny enough, while my degree was in science, I found myself deeply drawn to content creation, event management, and production, serving as a correspondent for Dynamix Magazine back then.

After graduation, I transitioned fully into the media space, starting at HipTv as a Social Media Manager and later moving to Pulse Nigeria, where I advanced from a video intern to the Head of Video.

CA: Interesting! Breaking into the digital content space is no small feat. What was your journey like, and were there any key mentors or role models who guided you along the way?

Kelvin: Oh, mentorship played a huge role in shaping my career. At HipTv, Seun Johnson taught me the ropes of social media content production. When I moved to Pulse Nigeria, Osagie Alonge opened my eyes to scripting and podcasting.

I also picked up technical skills like video editing and cinematography from Aniekan Etuhube. And Yetunde Oyeleke was instrumental in helping me understand YouTube optimization and content distribution. Each of them contributed to my growth, and their influence is still a big part of how I work today.

CA: Wow! The influence your mentors had on your growth is just remarkable.. But digital media is an ever-evolving and competitive field. What challenges did you face, and how did you push through them?

Kelvin: One of the biggest challenges is staying relevant, it’s no joke out here. Things change fast, and what worked yesterday might flop today. So, I had to embrace continuous learning and keep evolving.

I made it a habit to study new platforms, adapt quickly to emerging trends, and sharpen my strategies constantly. Being flexible and willing to try new approaches helped me stay ahead of the curve.

CA: Your career has been built on hard work and persistence. What kept you motivated, especially during the tough early days?

Kelvin: Honestly? My love for storytelling. Knowing that the content I created could move people, inspire them, or make them feel seen, that kept me going.

Even when things got tough, I held on to that passion and focused on the bigger picture. I always believed I was working toward something greater. Now, looking back, I can say every roadblock was just preparing me for the bigger wins.

CA: This is truly inspiring! So, how has your background and experience shaped the way you handle challenges in content production and strategy today?

Kelvin: My journey has really trained me to be both creative and strategic. I’ve had to juggle tight deadlines, lead diverse teams, and manage big-picture goals while still focusing on the tiniest details in production.

So now, I approach challenges with a blend of structure and flexibility. I know how to keep the content quality high, even when the pressure is on, and I’ve learned to lead with clarity and intention.

CA: You’ve earned recognition and inspired many in the industry. How does it feel knowing that your journey is paving the way for others in digital media?

Kelvin: It feels amazing, honestly. Knowing that my story can light a spark in someone else, that’s a huge part of why I do what I do. I’ve mentored quite a few upcoming creatives, and every time one of them reaches a milestone, it feels like a win for all of us.

Giving back in that way keeps me grounded and passionate about the future of this industry.

CA: I totally get that, there’s something truly fulfilling about seeing others win because of the seeds you’ve sown. Beyond content production, you’ve also become a leader and mentor to aspiring creatives. What inspired you to take on that role?

Kelvin: I wouldn’t be where I am without the mentors who poured into me early on, so it’s only right that I pass that energy forward.

It’s important to me that the next generation of creatives has access to guidance, opportunities, and a support system. That’s how we grow a more diverse and powerful digital media landscape.

CA: So, what’s next for you in your career? Any exciting projects or milestones on the horizon?

Kelvin: Definitely! I’m currently transitioning from Pulse Nigeria to PressOne Africa, where I’ll be serving as the Head of Media, Content, and Publications. It’s a big step, and I’m excited about the impact we’re set to make.

I’ll be focusing on shaping the brand narrative and driving awareness for PressOne as Africa’s leading business phone system for SMEs. This role is a new challenge and an opportunity to scale my influence, especially in the SME space.

CA: What’s one common misconception about content production or digital strategy that you’d like to correct?

Kelvin: People often think it’s just about “making videos,” but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Real content production is strategic, it’s about understanding your audience, crafting the right message, and delivering consistently across platforms.

It’s storytelling, analytics, timing, and a lot of behind-the-scenes work all rolled into one.

CA: Finally, if you could give just one piece of advice to anyone dreaming of making an impact in the digital content space, what would it be?

Kelvin: Stay curious. Keep learning. And never get too comfortable. The digital space rewards those who are both consistent and adaptable.

Trends will come and go, platforms will rise and fall, but your passion, curiosity, and commitment to growth will always keep you relevant. Push your boundaries, and don’t be afraid to evolve.
