Ghana Orders World’s Most Technologically Advanced ACH160 Helicopter

Airbus Helicopters has secured a major contract with Ghana’s Ministry of Defence to supply four helicopters, including the world’s most technologically advanced ACH160, as part of efforts to modernise the country’s military and government aviation capabilities.

Airbus confirmed it was awarded the contract to deliver two H175M multi-mission helicopters, along with one ACH175 and one ACH160 corporate transport helicopter under the Airbus Corporate Helicopters (ACH) brand. The deal represents a significant upgrade to Ghana’s rotary-wing fleet.

Arnaud Montalvo, Head of Africa and the Middle East at Airbus Helicopters, said the agreement marks Airbus’ return to Ghana with a focus on long-term partnership and customer support.

“We are particularly excited that the H175M will be operated in Ghana, showcasing the aircraft’s versatility across defence and security missions.

This key agreement also positions Ghana as a leading customer in West Africa for our premium corporate helicopters, the ACH160 and ACH175,” he said.

According to Airbus, the H175M helicopters will be used for a broad range of operations, including troop and personnel transport, search and rescue missions, emergency medical services, and disaster relief.

The H175M, a militarised version of the H175, is designed to operate in demanding environments while supporting both security and humanitarian operations.

The ACH160 is widely regarded as the world’s most technologically advanced helicopter, offering state-of-the-art avionics, high performance, and a spacious, customisable cabin.

The ACH160 features the Helionix flight deck, which improves safety and situational awareness, alongside advanced engines, low-vibration rotor systems, and high levels of comfort, making it well suited for VVIP transport and government missions.

These capabilities provide Ghana with a major upgrade in both executive transport and operational air power.

Ghana frequently deploys its armed forces for internal security, regional peacekeeping, and disaster response, and the addition of these helicopters is expected to significantly improve operational reach and rapid-response capability.

The acquisition also supports Ghana’s plan to replace its ageing helicopter fleet, a decision influenced by the fatal crash of a Z9 helicopter in August last year that killed several senior government officials.

The ACH175 and ACH160 will be configured for VVIP and government transport roles.

As part of Airbus Corporate Helicopters’ premium lineup, both models are designed for executive travel, combining long-range performance with enhanced cabin comfort.

Their inclusion highlights a dual-use strategy by Ghana’s Ministry of Defence, balancing frontline operational requirements with secure and reliable transport for senior officials.
