NAFDAC Seals Shine Shine Skincare Factory in Lagos Over Illegal Bleaching Cosmetics

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed an illegal cosmetic factory in Agege, Lagos State, after uncovering the production of harmful bleaching products falsely marketed as organic and safe.

Announcing the development on its official X (formerly Twitter) page, the agency said, “NAFDAC has sealed an illegal cosmetic production facility, Shine Shine Skincare, in Agege, Lagos State.

The operation uncovered the illicit production of bleaching cosmetics falsely marketed as ‘organic’ and safe for use, despite being manufactured under poor GMP conditions.”

During the raid, officials discovered a range of unregistered products being packaged and sold to unsuspecting consumers under misleading labels.

Among them were Peeling White Scrub, Glass Scrub Wash, Antiaging Radiant Glow, Customized Whitening Black Soap, 10X Customized Native Soap, 5D Instant Whitening Soap, Yellow Tone Whitening Body Cream, Exfoliation Soap, and Customized Body Cream.

NAFDAC stated that these cosmetics, produced in unsafe conditions and marketed as whitening agents, did not meet regulatory standards.

The agency stressed that their use poses serious health risks. “Investigations revealed that such deceptively formulated products often contain unsafe levels of banned substances, including corticosteroid-based bleaching agents, which can cause severe health risks such as skin thinning, delayed healing, and increased vulnerability to injury,” it noted.

The facility was sealed to halt further distribution of the products, and investigations into the illegal operation are ongoing.

NAFDAC urged Nigerians to remain vigilant when purchasing cosmetics and other regulated products, warning that the circulation of such unwholesome items represents a serious public health danger.
