The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reassured Nigerians that all Nestlé infant formula sold in the country are safe and not affected by the recent recall announced by Nestlé UK.
The agency said the precautionary recall in other countries involves specific batches of SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula due to the possible presence of a heat-resistant toxin called cereulide, but confirmed those affected batches are not registered or approved for distribution in Nigeria.
In an official notice signed by Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC’s Director-General, the agency said that the Nestlé infant formula products currently approved for marketing in Nigeria are safe for consumption and not part of the UK recall.
She emphasized that the products being recalled abroad were never registered by NAFDAC nor legally imported into the Nigerian market.
The statement highlighted that the SMA range sold locally is manufactured at Nestlé’s Tuas Factory in Singapore and duly registered with NAFDAC, including brands like SMA Gold 1, SMA Gold 2, and SMA Gold 3.
Channels Television and NAFDAC urged the public to stay calm and continue relying on verified information from the agency and other competent authorities, reassuring parents and caregivers that infant formula products approved for sale in Nigeria remain safe.
