Morocco Rolls Out Nationwide 5G Ahead of AFCON 2025

Morocco’s King Calls For Swift Reforms To Create Jobs And Reduce Regional Inequality has officially launched 5G, with its three major telecom operators, Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, and Inwi, switching on their fifth-generation networks on Friday, November 7.

The rollout promises speeds above 2 Gbps, ultra-low latency, and significantly increased mobile data capacity.

Its timing is critical, coming just weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which begins on December 21, where stable, high-speed connectivity will be essential for fans, organizers, and large-scale digital operations.

According to Ecofin Agency, Orange Maroc has already deployed its 5G network across 135 prefectures and provinces, covering a wide share of the country.

Maroc Telecom and Inwi are following similar strategies, concentrating initially on major cities and economic hubs before broadening coverage nationwide.

Inwi announced that its 5G service is automatically accessible to users with compatible smartphones, requiring no SIM card changes or subscription upgrades.

The launch aligns with the Digital Morocco 2030 strategy, which aims for 25% population coverage by the end of 2025 and 70% by 2030.

The broader objective is to keep pace with rising data demands, boost Morocco’s global competitiveness, drive innovation, and expand digital transformation in sectors including healthcare, education, public administration, and entrepreneurship.

Beyond enhanced streaming, online gaming, and high-definition video sharing, 5G is expected to unlock new business models and reshape how workplaces operate.

AFCON 2025 will serve as a high-pressure test of the network’s performance, particularly its ability to support live broadcasting and other intensive digital services.

Prior to this upgrade, Morocco already had strong mobile connectivity, with 99.64% of the population covered by 3G, 98.63% by 4G, and 99.64% by 2G, according to the Ministry of Digital Transition.

The arrival of ultra-fast, low-latency 5G is anticipated to further accelerate digital transformation, expanding telemedicine, remote learning, e-government services, and opportunities for emerging tech startups.
