Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance and a weekly day off for civil servants as part of measures to ease the impact of rising inflation and fuel costs.
The intervention, announced by the state’s Head of Service, takes effect from April 2026 and will run for an initial period of three months.
It is designed to cushion the sharp increase in transportation expenses and the broader cost-of-living pressures facing workers.
Under the arrangement, eligible public servants will be allowed one day off duty each week, while also receiving the ₦10,000 allowance as a palliative. Government said the policy is intended to reduce commuting frequency, lower personal expenses, and improve worker welfare amid persistent economic strain.

However, the weekly day-off provision does not apply to workers in essential services. These include medical personnel, judicial staff, teachers, security agencies, and key administrative officers whose roles require constant physical presence. Despite their exemption, they will still receive the transport allowance.
Implementation will be handled at the ministry and agency level, where accounting officers will determine specific off-duty days to ensure continuity of government operations and prevent disruption in service delivery.
The state government framed the move as a targeted response to inflationary pressure driven largely by increased fuel prices, which have significantly raised commuting costs for workers.
Officials also indicated that beyond immediate relief, the policy is expected to sustain productivity by reducing worker stress and improving morale within the public service.
