I Was Detained, Sent To Exile For Democracy – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said he was detained and forced into exile during Nigeria’s military era because of his role in the struggle for democratic governance.

Tinubu made the remark in Abuja while hosting members of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and leaders of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) at an interfaith breaking of fast at the Presidential Villa.

Naija News The president stated that many pro-democracy activists endured persecution while resisting military rule and fighting for the restoration of civilian governance in Nigeria.According to him, several activists, including himself, paid a heavy personal price for the democratic system the country now enjoys.

He said:“Some of us had been bruised struggling for it. We were detained, we protested, we had street demonstrations, we went into exile and all of that. We formed NADECO.”

Tinubu traced his political activism to the period of military dictatorship when he and other opposition figures joined the pro-democracy coalition known as the National Democratic Coalition to oppose the regime of late military ruler Sani Abacha.

He described himself as a “die-hard democrat,” stressing that his commitment to democratic ideals and the rule of law remains central to his leadership philosophy.

Tinubu also urged political actors across parties to respect democratic institutions and engage in constructive debate rather than confrontation, noting that adherence to the rule of law is essential for sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.
