Aphiwe Sithole: Building an African Luxury House Through Eyewear, Storytelling and Craftsmanship

For South African actor and entrepreneur Aphiwe Sithole, a pair of glasses can be more than an accessory. It can communicate identity, presence and personality before a person says a word.

That understanding sits behind Sithole Eyewear, the luxury eyewear brand he founded with an ambition that stretches far beyond frames. From the beginning, Aphiwe has envisioned the business as an entry point into something bigger: an African luxury house capable of growing across categories while remaining rooted in storytelling, craftsmanship and considered design.

It is an ambitious transition for a creative whose career first became familiar to audiences through acting. Aphiwe has appeared as Bonisile Nongena in Poppie Nongena, Bongani in Donkerbos, Athandwa Grootbom in Kelders Van Geheime and Thabani in Mooiweer en Warm.

But behind the screen, another creative story has been developing.

Raised in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, Aphiwe Sithole is now translating years of storytelling and an interest in aesthetics into a brand designed to place African luxury within a wider global conversation.

Aphiwe Sithole From Storytelling to Design

Creativity entered Aphiwe’s life long before Sithole Eyewear.

While in high school, he wrote poetry and performed during school functions. Acting later allowed him to experience storytelling from within, but entrepreneurship has given him another way to determine how an idea enters the world and what it represents.

His interests extend to architecture, silhouettes and minimalism, influences that can now be seen in the philosophy behind his eyewear.

For Aphiwe, the attraction to eyewear was also deeply connected to its position on the body. It sits directly on the face, making it one of the most immediately visible elements of personal style.

“It can transform posture, presence, and perception instantly. I was drawn to that,” he told BONA.

But entering eyewear was never intended to be the final destination.

“There are many fashion brands, but very few African luxury Houses. I didn’t want to build something seasonal. I wanted to build something architectural, something that could evolve into a House with multiple categories over time. Something that will be here long after I’m gone. Eyewear became the entry point.”

Building Sithole Eyewear Around Three Principles

The ambition behind Sithole Eyewear is supported by three principles Aphiwe identifies as Scarcity, Narrative and Craftsmanship.

Rather than pursuing mass exposure from the beginning, the brand has focused on controlled releases, strategic gifting, intentional placements and cultural credibility.

It is an approach that reflects the audience Aphiwe wants to reach: people who understand presence, pay attention to detail and value the experience of owning something that is not available everywhere.

That philosophy also separates his entrepreneurial journey from a simple celebrity-to-fashion expansion.

Aphiwe Sithole is attempting to build a recognisable design language around the brand, with each product contributing to a wider story.

“Sithole Eyewear was born from a desire to see African design positioned within global luxury conversations, not as an alternative, but as an equal,” he explained.

That distinction is central to his vision. African design does not have to sit outside established definitions of global luxury. It can enter the same conversation on the strength of its own ideas, craftsmanship and identity.

Aphiwe Sithole Makes Storytelling Part of the Design

That emphasis on narrative extends into how Sithole Eyewear develops its frames.

The process begins with meaning rather than immediately choosing a shape. Each frame starts with a story before moving through silhouette exploration, proportions and structural details.

Balance is also important. A design can make a statement while remaining wearable.

“We’re also moving into more bespoke production conversations internationally, as we continue refining our craftsmanship standards,” Aphiwe told BONA. “Nothing is rushed. Every release is treated like a chapter.”

It is an approach influenced by his background as a storyteller, but it also speaks to the patience required to build a premium brand.

For Aphiwe Sithole, creativity is not simply about responding to trends. It is a way of turning an internal vision into something tangible and creating objects that can remain relevant beyond a particular fashion moment.

From Khayelitsha to an African Luxury Vision

Behind the ambition is a personal foundation shaped in Khayelitsha.

Aphiwe credits his mother, Nokonwaba Happiness Sithole, with instilling discipline and respect in him while growing up. The values he describes from his childhood — including respecting elders and caring for neighbours — remain part of the person he has become.

Today, that foundation meets a much wider ambition.

As Sithole Eyewear develops, Aphiwe is looking beyond simply establishing a successful eyewear label. The longer-term vision is a luxury house capable of evolving into multiple categories while maintaining a distinct identity.

The next chapter includes a Cape Town presentation designed as an intimate and carefully curated experience. Two new frames are expected to be introduced in limited quantities, continuing the brand’s emphasis on scarcity and narrative.

For Aphiwe, however, the significance extends beyond introducing another collection.

“The presentation is about signalling the next chapter of Sithole Eyewear, not simply as an eyewear label, but as a luxury House in evolution.”

Sithole Eyewear and a Bigger African Luxury Conversation

The evolution of Sithole Eyewear reflects a larger ambition emerging from Africa’s creative industries: building brands that can participate in global luxury without treating their African identity as something that needs to be diluted.

Aphiwe Sithole is approaching that ambition through an unusual combination of disciplines. Poetry introduced him to expression. Acting developed his relationship with storytelling. Entrepreneurship is giving him the opportunity to translate those instincts into products, experiences and a business intended to endure.

Eyewear may be the starting point, but his vision is clearly larger.

By building Sithole Eyewear around scarcity, narrative and craftsmanship, Aphiwe Sithole is working towards a future in which an African luxury house does not need to be presented as an alternative to its international counterparts.

It can simply belong in the same conversation.
