Captain Ahmed Borodo is a name that resonates in the aviation industry, not just as a seasoned pilot but as an entrepreneur driving change in aircraft management in Africa.
From a successful career in telecommunications to becoming the Founder and CEO of Flybird Aircraft Management Services Limited,
Captain Borodo’s story is one of passion, persistence, and vision. In this interview, he reflects on his journey and the future of aviation in Nigeria and Africa.
CA: Captain Borodo, your career path is quite unique, transitioning from telecommunications to aviation.
What inspired this shift, and how did your previous career prepare you for your entrepreneurial journey in aviation?
Captain Borodo: It’s been an incredible journey, but it all comes down to following my passion. I spent many years in telecommunications, particularly at MTN Nigeria, where I served as a Team Lead.
It was a rewarding career, but I always knew my true calling was in the skies.
Aviation has been a lifelong passion of mine, and transitioning from telecommunications was a natural step for me.
The skills I gained in telecommunications, such as leadership, managing large teams, and working under pressure, have all contributed to my success in aviation.
The telecommunications industry taught me the importance of attention to detail and customer service—values I carry with me in my work today.
CA: You’ve achieved so much in aviation. Can you share a bit about your background and the steps you took to get to where you are today?
Captain Borodo: I started my aviation journey later than most, but with a strong determination.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Master’s degree in Development Studies from Bayero University Kano.
My journey into aviation began with a Private Pilot License (PPL) from the FAA in 2007, followed by further training and certifications, including my Commercial Multi-Engine Certifications.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of flying for various airlines, including Virgin Nigeria Airways and Camac International Limited.
But my real passion was in aircraft management, which led me to establish Flybird Aircraft Management Services in 2015.
CA: Flybird Aircraft Management Services Limited has grown rapidly under your leadership. What sets your company apart in a competitive industry like aviation?
Captain Borodo: Flybird has become synonymous with safety, excellence, and personalized service. We offer a full suite of services, including aircraft management, sales and acquisition, and support services.
What sets us apart is our commitment to providing tailored solutions to each of our clients, regardless of their needs. We’ve built a reputation for ensuring the highest standards of operational efficiency and safety, which is vital in an industry like aviation.
Over the last few years, we’ve brokered several aircraft acquisition transactions and continue to expand our client base across Africa.
We’re proud to be the largest aircraft management company in Africa, and we’re not stopping there.
CA: Aviation in Africa is often faced with numerous challenges. What are some of the most significant obstacles you’ve encountered, and how do you overcome them?
Captain Borodo: One of the biggest challenges is infrastructure. While the industry in Africa has seen growth, we still face issues related to inadequate airport facilities, inconsistent regulatory frameworks, and sometimes a lack of trained professionals.
However, I see these challenges as opportunities to innovate. We focus on building strong relationships with regulatory bodies and continue to advocate for better safety standards and operational efficiency across the region.
Overcoming these obstacles requires persistence, strategic thinking, and collaboration. We’re committed to doing our part in advancing the aviation landscape in Nigeria and Africa.
CA: You’re also spearheading the launch of a domestic airline, Q-air. What can you tell us about this venture and how it will impact the aviation industry in Nigeria?
Captain Borodo: Q-air is something I’m extremely excited about. It’s a scheduled domestic airline aimed at revolutionizing air travel in Nigeria.
We’re focused on making flying more accessible, efficient, and comfortable for Nigerians. With a blend of innovation and customer-centric service, Q-air will set new standards for domestic travel.
We’re also working to ensure that the airline is environmentally responsible and cost-effective, which will benefit both passengers and the industry as a whole.
It’s all about providing a high-quality flying experience while contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
CA: You’ve had a long and successful career in aviation. What advice would you give to aspiring aviation professionals who are looking to follow in your footsteps?
Captain Borodo: My advice is simple: Gain experience, build strong networks, and always prioritize safety and excellence.
The aviation industry is demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Be prepared for challenges, but don’t let them discourage you.
Build a strong foundation through education and training, and never stop learning. Also, always maintain a strong work ethic and dedication to your craft.
The most important thing is to stay focused on your goals, and, as I always say, ‘Make a way, not an excuse.’
CA: Looking ahead, what are your long-term goals for Flybird Aircraft Management Services and the broader aviation industry in Africa?
Captain Borodo: My long-term goal is to continue expanding Flybird, solidifying our position as the leader in aircraft management and sales across Africa.
We’re also working on a broader vision to create a more sustainable aviation industry in Africa, one that’s efficient, innovative, and world-class.
My vision for Q-air is also part of this—transforming air travel within Nigeria and beyond, ensuring that we continue to drive positive change in the aviation landscape.
It’s an exciting time for aviation in Africa, and I’m looking forward to what the future holds.
