Beninese music icon Angélique Kidjo has added another extraordinary chapter to her celebrated global career, becoming the first African musician to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The five-time Grammy Award winner was honoured in Los Angeles in recognition of a career spanning more than four decades, during which she has taken African sounds, stories and creative expression to audiences around the world. As reported by the BBC, the ceremony brought together Kidjo’s family, friends and prominent figures from the international entertainment community to celebrate the historic moment.

Angélique Kidjo’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star represents more than an individual career milestone. It celebrates decades of African musical excellence and places another powerful symbol of the continent’s creative influence at the heart of global entertainment.
For Kidjo, the occasion became an opportunity to celebrate Africa’s contribution to global music while reflecting on the ability of creativity to connect people across cultures.
“We Africans just don’t know what we’ve given to the world, and what we continue giving to the world for the music to exist,” she said during the ceremony.
The 66-year-old singer appeared radiant in a striking red ensemble complemented by a royal blue headwrap as she celebrated alongside guests including Hollywood actors Willem Dafoe and fellow Beninese star Djimon Hounsou, as well as Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold.
Kidjo also described the star as a reflection of a philosophy that has guided much of her life and music. For the celebrated performer, cultural differences do not have to create distance between people.
“The star for me means that my vision of the world as a small village is a reality,” she said. “It doesn’t matter where we come from, what language we speak, which skin colour we have. We are human. It’s one human family.”
Born and raised in Benin, Kidjo has spent decades building a musical identity that confidently places her African heritage within a global soundscape. Her work is celebrated for bringing West African musical traditions into conversation with jazz, funk, R&B and pop, creating a distinctive sound that has earned her audiences across continents.
Her remarkable catalogue spans 18 albums and collaborations with some of the world’s most recognised musicians, including Burna Boy, Alicia Keys, John Legend and Bono. Her latest album, HOPE!!, released earlier this year, continues that tradition of collaboration, featuring contributions from artists and creatives including Ayra Starr, Quavo, Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers and Diane Warren.
Her achievements extend far beyond recording studios and concert stages. Kidjo has received 17 Grammy nominations and won five awards, while her broader cultural influence earned her the prestigious Polar Music Prize in 2023. She was also named among Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2021.
At the Hollywood ceremony, Willem Dafoe praised Kidjo’s remarkable energy and dedication to her craft, describing her as an exceptional performer whose generosity and commitment extend beyond music.
That commitment has remained an important part of Kidjo’s public life. She serves as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and Oxfam and co-founded the Batonga Foundation, an organisation dedicated to expanding opportunities for girls and young women in Benin.
