Afrobeats musician David Adeleke, known professionally as Davido, has publicly distanced himself from the political support group known as the City Boy Movement, clarifying that his long-standing friendship with Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, is entirely personal.

The clarification followed social media backlash on Saturday, May 30, 2026, after Davido posted statements on X criticizing the general silence of public figures including himself regarding security challenges, mass abductions, and economic hardship in Nigeria.

What You Need to know

Davido expressed frustration over recent incidents, including the kidnapping of students and teachers in Oyo State, writing:

“I can’t lie, we entertainers… we dey fuck up, I won’t lie, including me. We need to speak up. It’s too much injustice going on. Our country don go.”

The post drew mixed reactions. Online critics questioned the sincerity of his statement, pointing to his proximity to individuals associated with the ruling political class. Specifically, an X user accused the artist of being performative, alleging that he maintained active participation in a “City Boys” political group chat.

The Response
Davido explicitly denied membership in any political campaign organization or affiliated group chat. He emphasized that his relationship with Seyi Tinubu predates recent political movements and does not restrict his ability to criticize state governance.

“I no dey part of any city boy group,” the singer stated. “I’ve been friends with ST [Seyi Tinubu] for years, and that’s where it stops, and I call and complain to him all the time, even in person.”

Davido further countered allegations of hypocrisy by reminding critics that he had previously faced domestic backlash for criticizing the Nigerian government during international media appearances. He maintained that his recent statements reflect genuine concern over national security rather than political positioning.
