Czech Republic Moves to Strengthen Trade and Investment Ties With Nigeria

The Czech Republic has renewed its commitment to expanding trade and investment relations with Nigeria, as diplomats and business leaders gathered in Abuja for the launch of the Nigeria–Central Europe Chamber of Commerce.

Speaking at a dinner to unveil the chamber, the Czech Ambassador to Nigeria, Tomáš Výprachtický, said his country was eager to deepen bilateral cooperation by building practical platforms that support dialogue, investment, and long-term partnerships.

The event was organised by the Nigeria–Central Europe Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Regional Trade Institute and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Nigeria.

According to the ambassador, the chamber is intended to bring together government officials, industry leaders, and players from the creative sector in an informal environment that encourages collaboration.

He noted that Nigeria and the Czech Republic already enjoy a long-standing political and economic relationship, with Czech companies and institutions operating in Nigeria for several years, as seen on Business Insider Africa.

Mr Výprachtický also highlighted strong people-to-people ties between both countries, citing Nigerian priests who have served in Czech monasteries in recent years.

He described Nigeria as a country rich in natural and human resources, with significant potential in engineering and technology.

Expanding cooperation in these sectors, he said, has been a key focus of his diplomatic mission, adding that while progress has been recorded, there is still considerable room to grow economic engagement between the two countries.

The President of the Nigeria–Central Europe Chamber of Commerce, Paschal Onyemaechi, said the organisation, registered in August 2025, was established to strengthen economic ties between Europe and Africa.

He explained that the chamber operates in at least five countries and seeks to connect European technical expertise with Africa’s natural resources, youthful population, and expanding markets.

He added that its priorities include promoting bilateral trade, encouraging investment, and providing timely information on market trends and emerging opportunities.

Mr Onyemaechi further disclosed that the chamber would support educational mobility, technology transfer, and closer collaboration among business leaders, policymakers, and industrialists.

Planned initiatives include the New Partnership for Development of Africa project, as well as programmes aimed at reducing postgraduate education costs through new arrangements with institutions in the Czech Republic.

The event also featured the induction of senior figures into the chamber’s leadership. Andrew Haruna, Pro-Chancellor of Bingham University and a distinguished linguist, was appointed head of the advisory council.

Other committee members inducted included Rislan Kanya, Jamilu Gwamna of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company, business leader Dere Awosika, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.
