Wingu Secures $60M from RMB to Accelerate East Africa’s Digital Infrastructure Expansion

In a landmark development for Africa’s tech infrastructure, Wingu Africa has raised $60 million from Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) to accelerate its expansion across East Africa, reinforcing the continent’s push toward digital self-sufficiency and cloud-first growth.

The announcement, made on June 2, signals a major leap forward in bridging Africa’s digital infrastructure gap and establishing the region as a serious player in the global cloud economy.

Wingu, East Africa’s only carrier-neutral data centre operator, will deploy the new capital to expand its footprint across Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, three key markets rapidly evolving into digital powerhouses.

The funding will go toward developing next-generation infrastructure that delivers secure, scalable, and high-performance environments for a fast-growing client base that includes telecom giants, hyperscalers, content providers, and financial institutions.

“This is not just an investment in infrastructure, it’s an investment in Africa’s digital independence,” said Anthony Voscarides, Group CEO of Wingu Africa.

“We’re expanding the capacity that will empower innovation, accelerate economic growth, and connect Africa to the future.”

Wingu’s facilities are engineered for high availability and resilience, featuring advanced cooling, power, and security systems to support demanding digital workloads.

In addition to colocation services, the company provides Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Cloud as a Service (CaaS), and satellite teleport capabilities, solutions designed for enterprises seeking low-latency, high-redundancy digital ecosystems that can scale seamlessly across the region.

Customers like Bayobab Africa and Cloudflare already rely on Wingu’s infrastructure to deliver mission-critical services across the continent.

Corrie Cronje, Senior Transactor at RMB, underscored the strategic importance of the partnership: “RMB is proud to support Wingu Africa’s commitment to advancing digital growth across the continent.

By financing the deployment of essential digital infrastructure throughout East Africa, we are investing in a connected future for all.” The significance of the deal extends far beyond corporate growth.

According to the World Economic Forum, while Africa is home to 18% of the world’s population, it hosts less than 1% of global data centre capacity. This funding marks a pivotal moment in reversing that trend.

It enables Africa to own more of its digital destiny, improving access to cloud computing, strengthening support for AI development, and closing the digital divide.

As Wingu moves forward with its regional expansion, the company is positioning itself not just as a service provider but as a foundational layer for Africa’s digital transformation.

The RMB-backed investment is more than a financial boost, it’s a strategic move toward long-term technological empowerment for East Africa and beyond.
