Togo Pitches Reforms at Ongoing Diaspora Investment Forum

Togo is presenting reforms aimed at boosting diaspora investment during an economic roundtable in Lomé, running Tuesday through Friday alongside the ninth Pan-African Congress, which opened Monday.

The event, hosted by Togo’s foreign ministry with support from the International Organization for Migration and the African Development Bank, seeks to direct diaspora resources toward productive activities and investment.

According to Togo First, the Togolese diaspora, estimated at about one million people in 2022, sent home roughly 405 billion CFA francs that year, marking a 16.7% increase from 2021.

While most remittances currently support household spending and property, the government hopes to redirect a portion toward business creation, infrastructure, and job generation.

The roundtable highlights Togo’s business environment, growth sectors, and available financing tools.

Five panels will discuss themes including reframing the diaspora as strategic partners rather than migrants, promoting diaspora-led entrepreneurship, tailored financial products, and potential legal reforms.

The program also includes B2B meetings and company visits, with authorities planning to establish a technical committee to monitor partnerships and maintain an updated pipeline of investment-ready projects.
