Over the course of eight years, Stephanie Obijiaku, founder of the Nigerian footwear and leather goods brand Nyne and Nuel, has turned a passion for shoes into a thriving business that’s now set to launch one of its most exciting collections yet: IJE by Nyne and Nuel.
The collection, inspired by the traditional beauty of Aso Oke fabric, marks a significant milestone in the company’s journey, as it aims to elevate Nigerian craftsmanship on the global stage.
Stephanie’s vision for Nyne and Nuel is to make a lasting impact on global fashion, highlighting the importance of African craftsmanship in the premium footwear market.
Stephanie’s journey into the world of footwear design didn’t begin with a formal fashion education.
Rather, it was a divine calling.
“I never planned to enter business or shoe design,” Stephanie recalls.
“But during my NYSC (National Youth Service Corps), I had a life-changing conversation with a mentor that inspired me to pursue shoe making.
It felt like God was guiding me in a direction I hadn’t considered.”
This pivotal moment set Stephanie on a path that would lead her to create a brand that not only designs shoes but embodies a deeper mission of empowerment, sustainability, and cultural pride.
Starting with a modest capital of just 100,000 Naira in 2017, Stephanie faced many challenges running a business in Nigeria, especially in footwear manufacturing.
Despite these hurdles, she remained determined to build Nyne and Nuel into a household name, known for stylish yet durable designs that blend contemporary fashion with African heritage.
Over the years, her brand has grown into a prominent name in Nigeria’s footwear industry, and she has remained unwavering in her commitment to promoting gender equality, job creation, and empowerment within her community.
“Nyne and Nuel is more than just a brand; it’s a movement aimed at creating opportunities for those who need them most,” Stephanie says.
The brand’s success has been marked by significant milestones, including the sale of over 6,000 pairs of footwear both locally and globally.
In 2023, Nyne and Nuel was selected for the prestigious Flourish Africa grant, a major accomplishment that further solidified its position in the global market.
This recognition is a testament to Stephanie’s dedication, vision, and tireless work promoting African craftsmanship to the world.
“We’ve worked hard to establish Nyne and Nuel as a symbol of quality, and this recognition affirms that we’re on the right path,” she shares with pride.
The IJE collection, set to launch on May 4, 2025, represents Stephanie’s vision for Nyne and Nuel: to blend modern fashion with traditional African artistry.
The collection features a diverse range of footwear designed for both comfort and style, offering options from trendy flats to sporty slides and platform sandals, all crafted with sustainable materials like cork and rubber soles.
“I want women who wear our shoes to feel empowered and stylish, like they’re walking with pride in every step,” says Stephanie.
“IJE is a collection that embodies both our heritage and our commitment to quality, comfort, and elegance.
It’s designed for the modern African woman who values both style and sustainability.”
Stephanie’s achievements and the success of Nyne and Nuel underscore the power of resilience, creativity, and vision.
As she looks to the future, she plans to expand the brand’s reach internationally, putting African craftsmanship in the global spotlight.
With each step, Nyne and Nuel is paving the way for more African brands to rise and compete on the global stage.
Through dedication, innovation, and a commitment to quality, Nyne and Nuel continues to evolve and lead in the African footwear industry.
Stephanie’s vision to create sustainable fashion and promote economic empowerment remains at the core of the brand’s mission.
