StarSat, a South African satellite television provider, has officially ceased operations after its parent company, OnDigital Media, was liquidated.
This move follows a series of events that began with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) raiding StarSat’s offices in October 2024 and cutting off its broadcast signals.
The company’s marketing manager, Jan Hendrik Harmse, confirmed the liquidation, citing the company’s failure to renew its broadcasting licence on time.
Despite promises to restore service and provide “bonuses” to affected customers, StarSat has gone silent, leaving many without refunds or updates.
The licence renewal debacle began in July 2023, when StarSat’s licence expired. The company missed the deadline to submit renewal documents and continued operating until Icasa intervened. Despite talks with Icasa, StarSat ignored the order to shut down, leading to the dramatic raid in October.
With OnDigital Media’s liquidation, customers waiting for refunds are now among the creditors hoping to get paid. The company’s financial troubles have dashed any hopes of a comeback, leaving StarSat’s customers in the dark.
