South Africa Advances Digital Travel Experience With New Online Declaration System for International Visitors

Travellers heading to or departing from South Africa will now experience a more digitally driven border process following the introduction of mandatory online traveller declarations, a move designed to streamline travel procedures and modernise customs management.

Beginning 1 July 2026, all travellers entering or leaving the country by air, land, rail, or sea are expected to complete an online declaration within 24 hours before departure. The initiative forms part of South Africa’s wider efforts to enhance efficiency, improve traveller experiences, and embrace technology-led border administration.

As reported by Business Insider Africa, the new requirement applies to South African citizens, permanent residents, and international visitors alike. Parents and legal guardians may also complete declarations on behalf of minors or individuals unable to do so independently.

The declarations are processed through the South African Revenue Service Traveller Management System (SATMS), which enables travellers to submit information through an online portal, mobile application, or designated self-service kiosks available at selected entry points.

Officials say the transition from paper-based customs forms to a digital platform is expected to simplify compliance, reduce processing times, and create a more seamless travel journey for millions of visitors and residents moving through South Africa’s borders each year.

The system requires travellers to provide passport information, travel details, and declarations relating to goods, currency, or other items exceeding prescribed thresholds. Business travellers or individuals transporting commercial items may be required to provide additional information.

Transit passengers who remain within designated transit areas at airports or ports are exempt from the requirement.
