Russia Breaks Export Record with Massive Grain Shipments to North Africa

Russia set a global export record in 2024 by delivering more than 10 million tons of wheat to Egypt, the highest volume ever shipped by Moscow to a single country.

The figure was confirmed by Russian Ambassador to Cairo, Georgy Borisenko, who noted that Russia had become Egypt’s leading wheat supplier during the year.

“Russia is the largest exporter of wheat to Egypt and delivered more than ten million tons there last year.

This is an unprecedented figure because no other country in the world has purchased grain in such volumes, and Russia has not sold this much wheat to any other country,” the ambassador said.

A report by Russian news agency TASS referenced comments by Tatyana Menlikeyeva, head of the regional branch of Russia’s Federal Center for the Safety and Quality Assessment of Agricultural Products in Tatarstan.

Speaking in May at the Russia-Islamic World KazanForum, she disclosed that Russia exported a total of 64 million tons of grain and grain products to 40 Muslim-majority countries in 2024.

Egypt has now become the world’s largest importer of Russian wheat, marking a milestone in the trade relationship between both countries.

Russia’s wheat supply to Egypt is part of a broader shift in Moscow’s trade strategy as it deepens ties with African countries and expands its agricultural exports to the Global South.

In 2024, Russia exported over $7 billion worth of agricultural goods to Africa, a 19% increase from the previous year.

These exports, which reached 45 African nations, were dominated by wheat, barley, and corn, making up 87% of the total.

Several African countries have significantly increased their Russian wheat imports.

By March 2025, Nigeria’s imports rose by 2.7 times, Morocco’s more than doubled, and Kenya’s grew by 35 percent.

Russia’s rising agricultural exports reflect its growing presence in global food supply chains and its strategic effort to strengthen trade relationships across North, West, and East Africa.
