Nigerian airlines have paused a planned nationwide suspension of flight operations after government intervention called for dialogue over rising fuel costs.
The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), which represents about a dozen mostly domestic carriers, had earlier warned that services would be halted from Monday, April 20. The group said increasing jet fuel prices had made airline operations no longer sustainable.
Following an appeal from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the operators agreed to temporarily suspend the shutdown plan and return to discussions.
“Rising from an emergency meeting held this evening, the Airline Operators of Nigeria has reached a concessionary but conditional decision to temporarily suspend its earlier planned shutdown action,” AON said.
The suspension will remain in place until a scheduled meeting on April 22 involving all relevant stakeholders, which has been convened by the minister.

As part of their conditions, the airlines called on government agencies and service providers to continue operations and stop requesting upfront payments, saying such demands were increasing financial pressure on the sector.
The operators pointed to rising jet fuel prices as a major challenge affecting global aviation, along with supply constraints and foreign exchange pressures that have pushed up costs in Nigeria. They also noted that fuel accounts for more than a third of airline expenses in the country.
