MTN Nigeria has confirmed a 200% price increase on its 15GB weekly data plan, contrary to its initial denial. The hike, which was supposed to be 50% as approved by the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), has sparked widespread criticism from subscribers.
The telecom giant quietly increased the bundle price from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000, prompting a flurry of complaints on social media. MTN Nigeria has since apologized for the mistake, stating that the increase was an error.
However, instead of reverting to the original price, the plan has been modified to offer 7GB for ₦3,000. The company’s apology did not provide clarity on whether the original plan would be reinstated or canceled altogether.
The tariff hike is part of a broader request by Nigerian telecom operators to increase prices due to rising operational costs and naira devaluation.
Lawmakers and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) have opposed the hike, citing the additional financial burden on consumers without improvements in service quality.
