Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has died at the age of 82 in a clinic in London, bringing an end to a significant chapter in Nigerian and African politics.
The news was confirmed in a statement released by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Sunday afternoon.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu wrote on X.
Buhari had been in the United Kingdom since April 2025 for what was initially described as a routine medical check-up.
However, he reportedly became ill shortly after arriving and remained in the hospital until his death.
