Afam Onyema’s story is one of legacy, ambition, and a passion for creating positive change. As the co-founder and CEO of GEANCO, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing essential services and educational opportunities to those in need, Onyema is driven by a vision to empower Nigeria’s future leaders.
Growing up, Onyema was inspired by his parents’ story of perseverance and determination. His father, Godwin, a trained doctor, and his mother, Nma, a nurse, had left Nigeria in the 1970s to pursue better opportunities in the United States.
However, their desire to give back to their homeland never wavered. This sense of purpose and responsibility was instilled in Onyema from a young age, and he has carried it with him throughout his journey.
Onyema’s path to entrepreneurship was not traditional. He began his career as a lawyer but soon realized that his true calling was in making a difference in his community.
He joined forces with his cousin, Obinna Okoye, to establish GEANCO’s operations in Nigeria. Together, they built a team that shared their vision of creating opportunities and transforming lives in Africa.
One of GEANCO’s flagship initiatives is its STEM education program for young girls. Onyema believes that empowering girls through education is key to unlocking Nigeria’s potential.
The program provides scholarships, mentorship, and hands-on training in cutting-edge technologies such as solar power systems, drone assembly, and 3D printing.
Onyema’s passion for empowering girls is evident in his words: “Every time a girl tells me she wants to be a nurse or an engineer, I feel a sense of fulfillment. We’re creating pathways for them to succeed.” Through GEANCO’s David Oyelowo Leadership Scholarship for Girls, Onyema has witnessed dreams take flight. The scholarship provides full tuition, healthcare, and social and psychological support to young female survivors of terrorism and gender inequality.
As Onyema looks to the future, he remains hopeful and committed to his mission. “We’re really excited about this work and hope to gain more support for it,” he says.
With the support of donors and partners, GEANCO aims to continue its work for another 17 years – or even 70 years. Onyema’s story is a testament to the power of entrepreneurship and the impact one person can have on their community.
