She pursued her higher education in the United States, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, summa cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh before obtaining a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School.
Despite opportunities to establish a legal career abroad, she returned to Kenya with a determination to contribute to governance, transparency, and public participation.
Her commitment to civic engagement became evident in 2006 when she co-founded Mzalendo, a parliamentary monitoring platform established to improve transparency and accountability within Kenya’s legislative system.
Through the initiative, citizens gained greater access to information about parliamentary proceedings, legislation, speeches, and the activities of elected representatives, helping to foster a culture of informed civic participation.
Ory’s influence expanded significantly during Kenya’s post-election crisis in 2007. Amid widespread violence and limited access to reliable information, she co-created Ushahidi, an innovative technology platform that enabled citizens to submit reports via text messages and online channels, which were then mapped in real time.
Originally developed to document incidents during the crisis, Ushahidi quickly evolved into a globally recognised tool for crisis response, election monitoring, humanitarian interventions, disaster management, and public health initiatives.
The platform has since been deployed in numerous countries around the world, demonstrating how an idea conceived in Africa can become a powerful instrument for accountability, citizen engagement, and social impact across continents.
Beyond civic technology, Ory has built an impressive career spanning law, policy, technology, investment, and entrepreneurship. She has worked with organisations including the World Bank, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, and the international law firm Covington & Burling, experiences that further shaped her understanding of governance, development, and institutional transformation.
Her expertise later led her to Google, where she served as Policy Manager for Africa, contributing to discussions around internet accessibility, digital inclusion, and technology policy across the continent.
She subsequently joined Omidyar Network, where she served as Managing Director, supporting entrepreneurs and initiatives focused on creating meaningful social and economic impact.
Today, Ory serves as a Partner at Verod-Kepple Africa Ventures, a pan-African investment firm focused on supporting innovative businesses and entrepreneurs across the continent.
Through venture capital and strategic investments, she continues to contribute to the growth of Africa’s entrepreneurial ecosystem while supporting founders building transformative solutions.
Her influence extends beyond executive leadership. Ory has served on the boards of several leading organisations and institutions, including Thomson Reuters Founders Share Company, East African Breweries Limited, Deloitte Africa, the Adecco Group Foundation, and the GSMA Foundation.
She is also a member of the Africa Advisory Board at Harvard University’s Centre for African Studies, reflecting her continued commitment to shaping conversations around Africa’s future.
