The Most Powerful African Passports in 2026
1. Seychelles
Seychelles remains Africa’s strongest passport in 2026, ranking among the world’s top 25 passports with access to over 150 destinations visa-free or via visa-on-arrival arrangements. The island nation has consistently dominated Africa’s passport rankings due to its strong diplomatic reach and tourism-driven foreign policy.
2. Mauritius
Mauritius secured the second spot in Africa with access to 147 destinations. The country continues to benefit from stable international relations and a globally connected economy.
3. South Africa
South Africa retained its place among Africa’s strongest travel documents despite tighter visa restrictions in some regions. Its passport currently provides access to around 100 destinations globally.
4. Botswana

Nigeria’s Position
Nigeria improved slightly in the global passport rankings in 2026, climbing to 89th globally according to updated Henley Passport Index data. However, the Nigerian passport still trails behind leading African countries in visa-free access.
