Disu declares total war on police corruption, impunity

Tunji Disu, now sworn in as acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has formally assumed command of the Nigeria Police Force and declared an end to corruption and impunity within the institution after his decoration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

Punch Newspapers Disu told State House correspondents that the Nigeria Police will operate under a regime of zero tolerance for corruption and human-rights abuses, insisting that impunity will no longer be tolerated at any rank.

He said officers must be trained to uphold human rights and that Nigerians, not political actors, are the true bosses of the police.

In his inaugural statements and inaugural address at Force Headquarters in Abuja, Disu outlined a reform agenda anchored on professionalism, accountability, and community partnership, asserting that the badge represents public trust and those who betray it will face disciplinary consequences regardless of rank.

He pledged to strengthen internal oversight mechanisms, promote transparency, and foster cooperation between the police and citizens to rebuild public confidence in the Force.

Disu’s declaration comes amid broader expectations that his leadership will confront endemic problems of misconduct, outdated systems, trust deficits with communities, and structural challenges that have historically undermined the institution’s credibility.

Under the amended Police Act, Disu may remain in office until 2030, subject to confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council and the Senate.
