Tinubu accepts Egbetokun’s resignation as IGP over “pressing family considerations

President Tinubu accepts the resignation of IGP Kayode Egbetokun, citing pressing family considerations; Tunji Disu appointed acting IGP President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who submitted a resignation letter to the presidency on February 24, 2026, citing pressing family considerations as the reason for stepping down.

The acceptance was confirmed in an official statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

Tinubu acknowledged Egbetokun’s decades of service in the Nigeria Police Force and to the nation, commending his dedication, professionalism, and contributions to strengthening the internal security architecture during his tenure.

Egbetokun was appointed IGP in June 2023 under the amended Police Act and was serving a four-year term expected to conclude in June 2027.

In response to current security challenges confronting Nigeria, Tinubu approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

The presidency expressed confidence in Disu’s operational experience and leadership capacity to provide steady direction for the force during this critical period.

Under the provisions of the Police Act 2020, the President is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP.

Upon council approval, his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation. This process aligns with legal and institutional requirements for filling the position on a substantive basis following an acting appointment.

The statement reiterated the federal government’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and equipped to fulfill its constitutional duties.

Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure as IGP ends on February 24, 2026, concluding nearly three years in office since his appointment.

Tunji Disu’s elevation marks a leadership transition within the police hierarchy amid ongoing security demands across the country.
