Airtel Africa (AAF.L) announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s direct-to-cell satellite technology to all 14 of its African markets.
The service, set to launch in 2026, will provide data for select applications and text messaging, as seen on Reuters.
Airtel Africa said customers with compatible smartphones in areas lacking terrestrial network coverage will gain connectivity through Starlink.
The partnership also includes support for Starlink’s first broadband Direct-to-Cell system, which uses next-generation satellites capable of delivering high-speed connectivity to smartphones with 20 times improved data speeds, according to the company.
Last month, Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile operator, became the first in Europe to roll out Starlink’s direct-to-cell satellite technology, aiming to keep millions connected amid wartime blackouts and infrastructure disruptions.
