Egypt Attracts Polish Fruitful Investment in Agricultural Processing

Polish frozen food producer and trader Fruitful has signed an agreement with Elsewedy Industrial Development, a subsidiary of Egypt’s Elsewedy Electric Group, to set up horticultural processing operations in Egypt.

The General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) said in a statement released on December 15 that the partnership allowed Fruitful to secure a site in 10th of Ramadan City for the project.

The development, whose cost has not been disclosed, will cover about 0.9 hectares and include a production facility for frozen food products.

The plant will use advanced technologies such as individually quick frozen (IQF) and freeze-drying, with a planned production capacity of 600 tons per month, according to Ecofin Agency.

GAFI said most of the output will be exported and produced to international standards. The project is expected to create more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs across the value chain, including strawberry and mango farming, agro-processing, cold storage, and logistics.

Fruitful chief executive officer Yasser Morsi said the company chose Egypt because of its strong infrastructure, investment facilitation measures, and strategic location that offers access to regional and global markets.

He also pointed to Egypt’s large agricultural base, which can supply the new plant with raw materials.

Egypt is Africa’s largest strawberry producer, with average annual output of about 613,556 tons between 2019 and 2023, according to Tridge data.

It is also the continent’s second-largest mango producer after Malawi, with average annual production estimated at 1.5 million tons over the same period.

The new facility is expected to boost value addition in Egypt’s fruit sector. According to FAO data, Egypt earned $2.46 billion from fruit exports in 2023, ranking it as Africa’s second-largest fruit exporter by value after South Africa.
