US approves $413m for Nigeria’s anti-insurgency war in West Africa

The United States government has approved $413 million (about ₦587 billion) to support counter insurgency and security operations in Nigeria and other West African nations under its fiscal year 2026 defence budget.

What the Funding MeansThe allocation is part of the 2026 U.S. National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA), which President Donald Trump signed into law on December 18, 2025.

The $413 million was fully authorised under Title XLIII – Operation and Maintenance, mainly for the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) to bolster regional security.

The NDAA does not specify exactly how much of the money will go into each country or operation but aligns with expanded U.S military engagement on the continent.

Why the Funding Was Approved The move comes as insurgency, banditry and violent extremism continue to threaten stability across the West African region, especially in:Nigeria’s North-East, where jihadist groups such as ISWAP remain active;North-West Nigeria, grappling with armed banditry;The Gulf of Guinea, facing piracy and maritime crimes;

Neighbouring countries including Mali and northern Benin experiencing spillover violence.

Broader U.S.–Nigeria Security CooperationIn early January, AFRICOM delivered a consignment of military equipment to Nigerian security agencies to support ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

These deliveries follow coordinated actions between U.S. and Nigerian forces, including air strikes targeting extremists in Sokoto State on December 25, 2025.

🛡️ Regional Context Analysts say the U.S. security cooperation with Nigeria is part of a broader strategic approach to address rising threats of violent extremism and maintain stability across West Africa.

The funding also comes amid growing geopolitical competition with other global powers seeking influence on the continent.

NewsSummary: The U.S. Congress has empowered AFRICOM with $413 million to support counterinsurgency operations across Nigeria and neighboring West African states as part of the 2026 defense budget.

This reflects deeper military collaboration and shared security interests amid escalating insurgent and bandit activities in the region.
