U.S. Hands Over Maritime Facility to Tanzania to Strengthen Security and Trade

The United States has officially delivered a new, U.S.-funded maritime facility to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, reinforcing growing defense and economic cooperation between the two nations, according to Business Insider Africa.

The facility, now under the Tanzania People’s Defence Force, will help strengthen maritime operations and improve vessel maintenance capacity.

Officials say the project represents more than infrastructure, symbolizing a long-term partnership based on shared security and prosperity.

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Andrew Lentz at the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam described the project as a milestone in bilateral relations.

“This facility represents our shared vision for a secure and prosperous future. By investing in Tanzania’s maritime capabilities, we are strengthening the bonds of trust and cooperation that make both our nations safer and more prosperous,” he said.

The embassy added that the facility will enhance the Tanzania People’s Defence Force Navy’s ability to sustain and maintain vessels, improving operational readiness and professionalism in line with the U.S. Department of Defense’s National Defense Strategy.

Tanzania To Begin Long-Delayed Bagamoyo Port Construction In December, Official Says

The Western Indian Ocean, one of the world’s busiest trade corridors connecting Africa to Asia and the Middle East, faces threats from piracy, illegal fishing, and trafficking, which require coordinated maritime security efforts.

Strengthening Tanzania’s maritime capacity supports a broader regional effort to secure sea lanes and boost legitimate trade, while aligning with Tanzania’s goal of becoming a logistics and shipping hub in East Africa.

Tanzania has recently expanded the Port of Dar es Salaam and the Port of Tanga under its blue-economy strategy, aiming to harness ocean resources for economic growth.

The new naval facility improves coastal surveillance and port security, enhancing investor confidence in shipping, logistics, fisheries, offshore energy, and ship repair.

The handover coincides with Cutlass Express 2026, a joint military exercise in Tanga and across the Indian Ocean that brings together African, U.S., and international naval forces to improve coordination in counter-trafficking and maritime law enforcement.

Hosting the exercise positions Tanzania as a key hub for regional maritime training and intelligence sharing, further strengthening its profile as a reliable partner in Africa’s evolving security landscape.

By linking strategic defense cooperation with economic development, both countries signal that security and prosperity in the Western Indian Ocean are deeply interconnected.
