Tinubu to Eliminate Barriers Blocking Livestock Export and Agricultural Growth Between Nigeria and Brazil

President Bola Tinubu has assured Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that Nigeria will remove all barriers standing in the way of its agricultural potential, particularly in livestock production, in order to promote food sovereignty and expand export opportunities.

Tinubu made this known in a post on his official Facebook page on Saturday, July 5, 2025, after a bilateral meeting with President Lula da Silva ahead of the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

The two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation across several key sectors including agriculture, technology, oil and gas, energy, trade, mining, extractive industries, and industrial development.

President Tinubu highlighted the shared values and historic ties between Nigeria and Brazil, noting that both countries have strengthened collaboration over the past two years.

“Today, we agreed to further deepen collaboration in agriculture, technology, oil and gas, energy, trade, mining and extractive industries, and industrial development. These sectors are critical to inclusive growth and prosperity for both our peoples,” he said.

He emphasized that, as two of the largest democracies in the Global South, Nigeria and Brazil must work together with courage, fairness, and vision to help shape a more balanced and just global future.

The President went on to assure that “all bottlenecks hindering the realization of the agricultural sector’s potential, including livestock production, will be removed to enable food sovereignty and export.”

According to a statement by his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu pointed out that bureaucratic hurdles have been a major factor delaying progress in the agriculture sector.

He explained that Nigeria is already implementing reforms aimed at making the economy more globally competitive, with a special focus on agriculture where the country holds a clear advantage.

Tinubu also stated that technical elements in agreements between both nations would be streamlined and accelerated in areas such as trade, aviation, energy transition, food and agriculture development, mining, and resource exploration.

President Lula da Silva, in response, assured that all outstanding agreements with Nigeria would be finalized, and updated memoranda of understanding would be signed during Tinubu’s next visit.

He acknowledged the need to eliminate bureaucracy between the two countries to achieve faster results.

Lula also added that Brazil’s research and development institutions will work closely with Nigeria to strengthen livestock farming efforts.
