OpenAI has confirmed plans to begin testing advertisements inside its popular ChatGPT service, marking a major new revenue strategy for the AI company as it looks to support its rapid growth and expand access for users worldwide.
In the coming weeks, ads will start appearing for logged-in adult users in the United States on the free tier and the low cost ChatGPT Go subscription the latter of which is now being expanded globally.
🧠 How the Ads Will Work
According to OpenAI’s official announcements:
Ads will be clearly labeled and shown separately from ChatGPT’s responses users will always know what is an answer and what is an advertisement.
The first tests will show ads below answers where ChatGPT determines a relevant sponsored product or service might be useful.
Ad content will not influence ChatGPT’s responses or the information it provides. The AI’s answers remain independent and based purely on helpfulness, not commercial influence.
OpenAI Help Center
User conversations are kept private — OpenAI says advertisers will not get access to individual conversation content or personal data in raw form.

📈 Why This Matters
This marks a significant shift in OpenAI’s business model. Traditionally, ChatGPT has relied heavily on subscription revenue.
Introducing ads is seen as a way to help offset the huge infrastructure and development costs associated with scaling artificial intelligence technologies costs that are said to be in the billions annually.
