Nigeria out as FIFA confirms DR Congo spot in 2026 World Cup

Nigeria’s hopes of appearing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been effectively ended after FIFA confirmed the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) as Africa’s representative in the intercontinental playoff tournament, removing any remaining path for the Super Eagles to qualify for the global competition.

The confirmation came when the world football governing body released the final lineup of teams that will compete in the inter-confederation playoff tournament scheduled to determine the last two spots for the expanded 48-team World Cup to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

DR Congo was officially listed among the participating countries, a decision that effectively shuts the door on Nigeria’s challenge and ends months of uncertainty surrounding the qualification dispute.

Nigeria’s football authorities had attempted to overturn the outcome of the African playoff final held in November 2025, where DR Congo eliminated the Super Eagles after a 1–1 draw that was decided by a penalty shootout victory for the Central African side.

Following that defeat, the Nigeria Football Federation filed a protest with FIFA, arguing that DR Congo had fielded players who were allegedly ineligible under FIFA eligibility rules.

The petition created months of speculation among fans and football administrators in Nigeria, with the hope that a favorable ruling could reinstate the Super Eagles into the playoff pathway.

However, FIFA’s latest communication to media and tournament organizers listed the qualified teams without any amendment, strongly indicating that the governing body did not uphold Nigeria’s complaint.

Western Post With the final lineup confirmed, six countries will compete in the intercontinental playoff tournament: Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname.

The competition is scheduled to take place in Guadalajara and Monterrey, Mexico, between March 26 and March 31, 2026, where the teams will battle for the final two places at the World Cup.

Under the tournament structure, the two highest-ranked teams DR Congo and Iraq advance directly to the final stage of the playoff bracket, while the four lower-ranked teams will first face each other in semifinals.

DR Congo is expected to meet the winner of the match between Jamaica and New Caledonia, with the victor securing qualification to the World Cup.

The confirmation means Nigeria will miss the FIFA World Cup for the second consecutive edition, following their absence from the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

For a national team that had qualified for six of the previous eight World Cups since their debut in 1994, the development represents one of the most significant qualification setbacks in recent Nigerian football history.
