MultiChoice Nigeria Defies FCCPC Orders, Hikes DStv and GOtv Prices Amidst Backlash

In a move that has sparked widespread outrage, MultiChoice Nigeria has increased the subscription prices for its DStv and GOtv services, despite being instructed by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to hold off on any price hikes while a review was ongoing.

The price increase, which took effect on March 1, 2025, sees the DStv Compact bouquet rise by 21% to ₦19,000, while the Premium package now costs ₦44,500. GOtv subscribers have also been affected, with the Plus package now priced at ₦5,800.

This is not the first time MultiChoice Nigeria has raised prices, having done so previously in May 2024. The company has blamed inflation, high energy costs, and the naira’s freefall for the price hikes.

However, the FCCPC has taken a dim view of MultiChoice’s actions, accusing the company of ignoring regulatory orders, obstructing an ongoing investigation, and demonstrating a pattern of disobedience. The commission has dragged MultiChoice Nigeria and its CEO, John Ugbe, to court over the matter.

The FCCPC argues that the issue is not just about the price increase, but also about consumer rights and fair competition. The commission is determined to hold MultiChoice accountable for its actions.

This is not the first time MultiChoice has faced legal action over its price hikes. In April 2024, a lawsuit was filed against the company, accusing it of increasing subscription fees without providing the required one-month notice. However, the case was eventually withdrawn due to delays and concerns about the tribunal’s handling of the matter.

The outcome of the current court battle between the FCCPC and MultiChoice Nigeria remains to be seen.
