Moniepoint Partners with AfriGo to Roll Out 5 Million Contactless Payment Cards in Nigeria

Nigerian fintech unicorn Moniepoint has partnered with AfriGo, the national domestic card scheme, to introduce contactless payment solutions across Nigeria.

The partnership aims to roll out five million contactless payment cards and tap-to-pay solutions, aligning with Nigeria’s shift toward contactless payments.

The initiative will leverage Moniepoint’s extensive network of agents and merchants to bring “tap and go” convenience to an economy still dominated by cash and PIN-based card transactions.

This move is expected to accelerate the Central Bank’s cashless agenda and extend digital payments into underserved communities.

Moniepoint’s VP of corporate affairs, Didi Uwemakpan, emphasized the need to mimic the speed and reliability of cash transactions while promoting digital payments. The company chose AfriGo for its cost efficiency and plans to launch contactless-enabled cards in H2 2025.

To ensure security, Moniepoint will comply with the CBN’s contactless payment guidelines, including risk management measures such as transaction limits.

The company will also determine the threshold for PIN authentication. The successful rollout of this partnership could mark the beginning of widespread contactless payment adoption in Nigeria.
