Kennedy Odede is a force in global social entrepreneurship and a community builder who turned lived hardship into large-scale impact, transforming how development is driven from the ground up.

He is a systems thinker whose life’s work is centered on one belief: real change must be led by the people closest to the problem.

Born in Kenya, Kennedy lived in Nairobi’s Kibera slum for 23 years and experienced extreme poverty firsthand, an experience that shaped his lifelong mission to transform how communities are empowered and developed.

With no formal education and limited opportunity, Kennedy began working in a factory earning about $1 for 10 hours of work. From that income, he saved 20 cents, enough to buy a soccer ball.

That simple decision became the foundation of something much larger. He used the ball to gather people in his community, creating unity, dialogue, and collective action. From this grassroots spark, Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) was born.

Today, Kennedy is the co-founder and CEO of Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), one of Africa’s largest grassroots movements, operating across Kenya and beyond, with its global base also connected to New York.

SHOFCO has grown into a powerful platform that organizes communities, delivers essential services, and creates systems for education, clean water, health access, and leadership development, especially for women and girls. It now impacts millions of people annually across Kenya through hundreds of community sites.

Kennedy’s journey is also one of global recognition. In 2010, he was awarded the Echoing Green Fellowship, marking him as one of the world’s emerging social innovators.

In 2014, he was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list of top social entrepreneurs. He is also a member of the Clinton Global Initiative, and his work has been highlighted by global figures including Bill Clinton and widely featured in international media.

His influence extends into global leadership spaces. Kennedy is a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum, an Obama Foundation Africa Leaders Fellow, and a senior fellow with Humanity in Action and the Aspen Institute.

In 2022, he was appointed to the USAID Advisory Committee, further cementing his role in shaping global development conversations.

In 2024, he was named among TIME100 Most Influential People, and in 2025, he became the first Kenyan recipient of the United Nations Nelson Mandela Prize, a recognition of his lifelong commitment to dignity, equality, and community-led change.

Beyond institutions and accolades, Kennedy is also a storyteller. He co-authored the New York Times bestselling book Find Me Unafraid: Love, Loss, and Hope in an African Slum with his wife and partner, Jessica Posner Odede.

The book tells the deeply personal story of how their partnership helped build SHOFCO and amplify the voices of vulnerable communities.

What makes Kennedy Odede extraordinary is not just his rise from the streets of Kibera, but his unwavering belief that those same streets hold solutions to some of the world’s hardest problems. He does not see communities as places to be saved, but as ecosystems of leadership waiting to be unlocked.

Kennedy Odede is not just leading an organization, he is redefining what leadership looks like when it is rooted in dignity, lived experience, and collective power.
