Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed an incident from his first national team call-up in 2017, where he was turned away from Kelechi Iheanacho’s hotel room by a senior teammate.
Speaking during a livestream, Osimhen explained that upon arriving in camp as a young player, he approached Iheanacho out of respect and even offered to carry his boots a common gesture by newcomers. Iheanacho then gave him his room number and asked him to come over.
However, when Osimhen got to the room and knocked, Iheanacho’s roommate described as a prominent senior player at the time opened the door and sent him away without letting him in.
Osimhen deliberately refused to reveal the identity of the player involved. The situation changed shortly after. Iheanacho returned, discovered what had happened, and reacted angrily, confronting his teammate for chasing away a visitor.
He then personally brought Osimhen into the room. Osimhen noted that the moment was initially embarrassing but became part of his early experience integrating into the senior squad.
At the time, he was just breaking into the Super Eagles setup following his rise from youth football, where he had gained global attention after the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
