The emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting called by President Bola Tinubu to honor the late former President Muhammadu Buhari has been postponed due to a scheduling conflict with the state funeral arrangements.
Buhari passed away on Sunday at the age of 82. The FEC meeting was originally set for Tuesday, July 15, but will now be held on a new date to be announced later, Nairametrics reported.
The Federal Government has also declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday in honor of the late leader.
Buhari will be buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites. His body is expected to arrive from London by noon on Tuesday.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, explained that the postponement is necessary to accommodate the funeral proceedings.
“The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will announce a new date after the funeral proceedings,” he said in a statement.
President Tinubu had called for the special FEC meeting to pay tribute to Buhari’s contributions to the country.
In recognition of his predecessor’s legacy, Tinubu also declared a seven-day national mourning period, ordered all flags to fly at half-staff, and directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to travel to London to condole with the Buhari family and accompany the late President’s remains back to Nigeria.
