FG declares Thursday, Friday public holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr celebration

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, March 17, by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

This two-day holiday is intended to allow the Muslim faithful to celebrate the festival that signifies the successful completion of the 29 or 30 days of Ramadan fasting and spiritual reflection.

In the official statement, the Minister extended his congratulations to Muslims across the country for their endurance and devotion throughout the holy month.

He emphasized the importance of sustaining the core values practiced during Ramadan, specifically urging citizens to uphold the virtues of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice in their daily lives.

The government highlighted that these qualities are essential for the continued progress and social cohesion of the nation.Beyond the religious celebration, the Minister called on all Nigerians to use the festive period as an opportunity to pray for the peace, unity, and prosperity of the country.

He also encouraged citizens to celebrate responsibly and to extend acts of kindness and support to the less privileged within their communities, reflecting the charitable spirit inherent in the Eid-ul-Fitr tradition.

To ensure a secure environment for the celebrations, various security agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have reportedly deployed thousands of personnel across the country to protect lives, property, and critical national infrastructure during the holiday period.
