Exxon Mobil announced on Wednesday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Gabon to explore for oil and gas off the country’s coast.
The non-binding agreement marks an expansion of the U.S. energy giant’s presence in Africa, Reuters reported.

The company already operates in Nigeria, Angola, and Mozambique, although it decided to exit Equatorial Guinea in 2022.
An Exxon spokesperson said in a statement that the company will collaborate with Gabonese authorities to explore both deepwater and ultra-deepwater offshore areas for potential oil and gas resources.
Earlier in August, Exxon signed a similar deal with Trinidad and Tobago to explore deepwater regions, marking its first return to the Caribbean nation in more than two decades.
