East Africa Powers Airtel Africa’s Growth with Big Gains in Calls, Internet and Mobile Money

Airtel Africa has posted strong financial results for the year ending March 31, 2025, with East Africa emerging as a key growth engine for the group.

The region delivered a 13.6% increase in revenue, rising to US$1.843 billion from US$1.622 billion in the previous year.

The growth was powered by strong performances across core segments: voice contributed US$906 million, data services brought in US$755 million, and mobile money accounted for US$747 million.

Customer numbers in East Africa grew by 11.7%, largely driven by expanded network coverage and a growing distribution footprint.

The company’s continued investment in 4G infrastructure across East Africa played a critical role in delivering better connectivity and services to its users.

“East Africa continues to demonstrate exceptional growth potential, driven by strong demand for digital and financial inclusion,” said Sunil Taldar, Managing Director and CEO of Airtel Africa.

“Our continued investment in the network and the expansion of 4G infrastructure across East Africa is delivering tangible results for our customers and communities through enhanced connectivity and innovative services.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to expanding access and deepening engagement in this high-opportunity region.”

Across its entire footprint, Airtel Africa reported revenue growth of 21.1% in constant currency.

Mobile services rose by 19.6%, while mobile money revenue surged by 29.9%.

The group’s customer base grew by 8.7% to reach 166.1 million subscribers.

Underlying EBITDA rose to US$2.304 billion, marking an 18.1% increase, while profit after tax reached US$328 million, an impressive turnaround from a loss of US$89 million in the prior year.

“The recent stability in the operating environment is encouraging, however we remain conscious of global developments that may impact our business,” Taldar added.

“We will remain focused on delivering our strategy to transform the lives of our customers and support economic prosperity across our markets.

I want to say a particular thank-you to our customers, partners, governments and regulators for their support and our employees for their unrelenting contribution to the business.”
