Africa’s largest industrial project is set for a major scale-up as Aliko Dangote announced plans to expand the Dangote Refinery to a production capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day. The expansion, unveiled in April 2026, is expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s refining capacity and strengthen its position in global energy markets, as reported by Independent Nigeria.
The project will more than double the refinery’s current capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, positioning it to become the largest single-site refinery in the world upon completion, as highlighted by BusinessDay Nigeria. The scale of the upgrade underscores growing confidence in Nigeria’s industrial potential and the broader push toward energy self-sufficiency across Africa.
A key highlight of the expansion is its employment impact. Dangote disclosed that up to 95,000 skilled workers will be engaged at peak construction, reflecting one of the largest job creation efforts tied to a single industrial project on the continent, Punch Nigeria noted. He described the initiative as a milestone for engineering excellence and workforce development, particularly for Nigerian professionals.
Beyond refining, the expansion is expected to deepen integration into petrochemicals and related industries, increasing output of materials used in manufacturing, plastics, and consumer goods. This aligns with Dangote Group’s broader ambition to build a fully integrated industrial ecosystem around the refinery complex.
The development reinforces a wider trend of large-scale private-sector investments reshaping Africa’s industrial landscape. If executed as planned, the expansion could transform Nigeria into a major global refining hub while accelerating job creation, export capacity, and long-term economic growth.
