Abdullahi Usman resigns as NAHCON Chairman

Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), has officially resigned from his position, effective Monday, February 9, 2026, ending his tenure ahead of this year’s Hajj exercise.

In a formal statement, Prof. Usman said his decision was taken purely for personal reasons after prayerful reflection and consultation with his family.

He stressed that the move was not due to any disagreement with the Commission or the government.

He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the trust placed in him, acknowledged the support of Vice President Kashim Shettima, NAHCON board members, staff, and key partners, including State Pilgrims Welfare Agencies and Saudi Arabian counterparts, for their collaboration in advancing Nigeria’s Hajj operations.

Prof. Usman was appointed NAHCON Chairman in August 2024 and led Nigeria’s 2025 Hajj operations.

His departure comes amid internal tensions within the commission, including a board petition earlier this year expressing concerns over leadership.

NAHCON will continue its preparations for Hajj 2026, with leadership transition arrangements expected to be announced soon.
