Ghana has emerged as the 10th most expensive fuel market in Africa as of June 2025, even after fuel prices dropped for the seventh time this year and the local currency recorded one of the continent’s strongest performances.
Data from GlobalPetrolPrices.com places Ghana’s current fuel price at $1.399 per litre, ranking 60th globally.
The country’s fuel price standing comes in spite of the Ghanaian cedi appreciating by a notable 24% against the US dollar since January 2025, a development that many had hoped would bring more significant relief at the pumps. Yet, Ghana remains among the priciest places in Africa to purchase fuel.
The Central African Republic continues to top the African fuel price chart at $1.830 per litre, followed by Senegal at $1.725, Zimbabwe at $1.540, Côte d’Ivoire at $1.490, and Burkina Faso at $1.481.
Cameroon, Malawi, Morocco, and Uganda follow in 6th to 9th place, with Ghana completing the top ten.

Ghana and Uganda entered the top 10 in June, pushing out Guinea and Sierra Leone, both of which had featured in the previous month’s rankings.
Some countries in the top bracket, including Senegal, Zimbabwe, and Côte d’Ivoire, recorded price hikes during the same period.
Ghanaian consumers saw some relief at the pump starting June 16, with petrol quoted at GH¢10.99 per litre and diesel dropping from GH¢12.75 to GH¢12.45 at select stations.
According to the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies, this reduction is largely due to the cedi’s steady appreciation, as well as the government’s recent suspension of the GH¢1 fuel levy, a move that prevented an expected price increase.
Still, analysts caution that despite these price drops, Ghana’s fuel remains costly compared to most of its peers across the continent.
The Chamber continues to call for long-term structural reforms in the petroleum sector to ensure price stability and shield consumers from global market volatility.
