Ghana Breaks Into Africa’s Top 12 Cheapest Fuel Markets

Ghana has inched up in Africa’s fuel price rankings, now holding the 12th position among countries with the lowest petrol prices on the continent.

This improvement comes after falling to 13th place earlier in January 2025.

According to updated data from GlobalPetrolPrices.com, the average petrol price in Ghana for April stood at $1.029 per litre, ranking the country 48th globally.

Libya retained its longstanding position as the cheapest fuel market in both Africa and the world, offering petrol at just $0.027 per litre.

Angola followed with $0.328 per litre, and Egypt at $0.331, maintaining their respective second and third positions on the continent.

Other countries rounding out the top ten in Africa include Algeria ($0.343), Nigeria ($0.560), Sudan ($0.700), Tunisia ($0.831), Ethiopia ($0.851), Liberia ($0.871), and Ghana ($1.029).

Locally, Ghanaian consumers experienced a slight increase in fuel prices at the start of April.

A report from the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) confirmed that petrol prices rose by 2%, bringing the current pump price to GH¢15.20 per litre.

Diesel also saw a 1.1% uptick and now sells at GH¢15.35 per litre.

In contrast, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) recorded a marginal decline of 0.3%, settling at GH¢17.30 per kilogramme.

Despite these domestic changes, global crude oil prices have remained relatively stable, hovering around $65 per barrel in the first quarter of 2025.

This stability in international oil markets, however, has not fully translated to consistent local pricing, reflecting Ghana’s ongoing struggle to cushion fuel costs amid broader economic and fiscal pressures.

Earlier in the year, Ghana’s position in the continental rankings slipped to 13th, with a national average of $1.051 per litre in January, up from $0.985 in December 2024.

The global ranking also shifted from 43rd in December to 53rd in January, underscoring the volatility of fuel prices driven by both international trends and internal policy dynamics.

While Ghana’s recent upward shift in Africa’s fuel price rankings marks a modest gain, it also highlights the persistent challenge of maintaining fuel affordability for its citizens.
